I do not think it is a coincidence that many men deem one of their top love languages as touch -- if not their top one.

I have always found the statement funny -- only because it was repeatedly repeated among the men I have connected with -- but reading bell hooks, has altered my way of understanding why that may be the case.

I had originally thought it was because most men are naturally sexual beings. Let us just be honest. It sometimes seems like a switch they cannot turn off, which can be heavily frustrating at times, but I may have even accepted it myself as the norm, making an excuse, almost, for them. Not anymore.

No more excuses. I have a wider view of the root.

bell hooks mentions neglect that men may have gone through at a young age, such as their mom and dad not only telling them that they needed to "get over a boo-boo", but weaning them off of the constant sentimental touch that they may have had as a newborn. There are phrases such as "you are the man of the house now," that many single mothers tend to speak to their children at young ages, once fathers step out, hardly ever to be a part of the boy's upbringing. Or a broken element of the boy's childhood.

That need for touch is almost a longing -- a silent call for something deeper that most cannot begin to figure out how to find genuine satisfaction in.

I do not believe it is the case for every male, but I do believe many may have such an infliction, whether they realize it or not.

I will not lie, I find it hard to truly dig into this subject as deeply as I would prefer; for I am still attempting to maneuver my way through the knowledge I am gaining myself, and I am no male. However, I do know that I want this world to be a better place, and I can only contribute by trying my best to understand different perspectives and ideas.

So I will continue to dig. I will continue to explore and seek. As that is the only way I know how to only be me.
